The challenge

Every developer has been blocked by a port something else already owns. Finding the culprit means leaving the editor for terminal commands that differ on every OS — and force-killing the wrong PID can take down the database you actually needed.

The approach
  • 01Built a cross-platform Electron shell around a React 19 + Vite + Tailwind v4 interface, so the app feels native on Windows, macOS and Linux from one codebase.
  • 02Listed every process listening on a port with the detail needed to decide — PID, command, port — and killed the right one in a single click.
  • 03Locked the security model down: contextIsolation on, no direct Node access from the renderer, and a minimal IPC surface between the two processes.
  • 04Shipped it MIT-licensed with an automated release pipeline so anyone can audit, build or fork it.
The outcome

Dtask turns a minutes-long terminal ritual into a one-click action. It is published on GitHub under the MIT licence, with builds for all three desktop platforms.
